What I Wish I Knew Before Trying to Grow My Hair Long

Posted by Holly Powells on

When I first started really trying to grow my natural hair long, I thought it was going to be way more complicated than it actually was.

I remember watching women in the natural hair community who had grown their hair really long and trying to figure out what they were doing differently. I eventually did the big chop and started over, and that is when I really started learning my hair.

One thing I wish I knew back then?

Growing my hair long actually became pretty simple once I got a routine down and stopped doing so much to it.

For me, the biggest things were keeping my hair hydrated, moisturized, protected, and most importantly, leaving it alone.

And when I say leave it alone, I mean exactly that. 😂

I think one of the biggest mistakes we can make when we’re trying to retain length is constantly manipulating our hair. Twisting it, braiding it, taking it down, restyling it, combing through it, and changing the style every couple of days.

Every time we’re handling our hair, especially those older, more fragile ends, there is another opportunity for tangles, pulling, snapping, and breakage.

Your hair can absolutely be growing from the scalp, but if your ends are constantly breaking off, it can feel like you’re not making any progress.

That is why length retention became just as important to me as hair growth.

Once I got my routine down, I stopped feeling like I needed to be in my hair every day. I focused on keeping it hydrated, moisturizing it when it needed it, taking care of my scalp, protecting my ends, and cutting down on unnecessary manipulation.

And baby… my hair took off.

Not because I discovered some complicated secret.

I became consistent.

I learned what my hair needed, created a routine I could actually stick with, and stopped messing with it all the time.

Hydration also became a huge part of that routine for me. When my hair feels dry, I don’t just ignore it. That’s where my Glamorous Scalp & Hair Hydration Mist comes in. And when I want to give my scalp some extra care and seal in moisture, I use my Glamorous Hair Growth Oil.

My routine does not need to have 15 different steps or 20 different products.

It just needs to work for my hair and be something I can stay consistent with.

If I could go back and tell myself one thing at the beginning of my hair journey, it would be this:

Stop doing the most.

Get yourself a simple routine. Keep your hair hydrated and moisturized. Protect those fragile ends. Be gentle with your hair. And give it time to do what it’s going to do.

Sometimes growing long hair isn’t about adding more and more steps to your routine.

Sometimes it’s about learning what to stop doing.
