What I Learned From Losing Length — and Growing My Hair Back

Posted by Holly Powells on

My real hair journey, what went wrong, and what I changed.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you already know I love my hair. I love wearing it straight, I love seeing it grow, and I love a good hair moment. But my hair journey has definitely not been perfect.

At one point, my hair was almost to my waist.

And then… I started losing the very thing I had worked so hard to grow.

I Thought I Was Protecting My Hair

For a long time, I wore braids because I thought I was doing the right thing. You hear “protective style,” and naturally you think your hair is protected underneath.

Well, that wasn’t my experience.

Eventually, my hairstylist told me my hair had become thin and brittle, and a lot of it had to be cut off.

BABY. 😩

When you’re used to seeing long hair down your back and then somebody starts cutting it, that will humble you real quick.

But looking back, that haircut ended up teaching me something important:

Growing hair and keeping your length are two completely different things.

My hair could grow all day long, but if it was constantly breaking, becoming dry, or getting weak, I was never going to see the length I wanted.

So I Changed What I Was Doing

I stopped wearing the braids.

Instead of obsessing over finding another style that would magically make my hair grow, I started paying more attention to the actual health of my hair.

I focused on keeping it moisturized, handling it gently, protecting it at night, and being more intentional about what I was doing between wash days.

And because I’m a straight natural, I also had to learn that wearing my hair straight doesn’t mean I have to sacrifice healthy hair.

I still love my blowouts and presses.

I just became more mindful about heat, hydration, and manipulation.

At night, you’ll often catch me using flexi rods instead of reaching for more heat. I protect my hair, keep it moisturized, and let it rest.

Nothing fancy.

Just consistency.

Hydration Became a BIG Deal for Me

One of the biggest things I’ve learned during this journey is that my hair does so much better when I don’t wait until it feels dry to give it moisture.

That’s part of why my Glamorous Scalp & Hair Hydration Mist stays in my routine.

And my Glamorous Hair Growth Oil is another product I regularly use as part of caring for my scalp and hair.

These products started from my own personal hair journey long before Glamour Girls became what it is today.

But I also want to make something very clear:

There was no one magic product or overnight trick.

It was the routine.

The products, the gentler styling, protecting my hair, paying attention to breakage, and actually staying consistent all worked together for my hair.

And Then My Length Started Coming Back

Little by little, I started seeing the difference.

My hair felt better.

It looked healthier.

And most importantly, I was actually keeping the hair that was growing.

Today, my hair is back around bra-strap length, and I’m still working toward my ultimate goal.

Waist length, baby. 😂

But this time around, I’m not just chasing inches.

I want healthy length.

Because I’ve already learned what happens when you focus on how long your hair looks but ignore what your hair may be trying to tell you.

What I Would Tell Someone Starting Over

If you’ve experienced breakage, thinning, a major haircut, or you just feel like your hair “won’t grow,” don’t get discouraged.

Sometimes the question isn’t:

“Why isn’t my hair growing?”

Sometimes the better question is:

“Am I keeping the hair that’s already growing?”

Pay attention to your ends. Pay attention to dryness. Pay attention to styles that may be putting too much tension on your hair. And most importantly, learn your hair.

What works for somebody else might not work for you.

I learned that one the hard way.

And apparently, sometimes the hard way comes with scissors. 😂

But we grew it back.

And we’re not done yet. 💕
